Initial Teacher Training update

By Sarah Bird, ITT Lead at the Julian Teaching School Hub.

The recent ITT market review considered how the ITT sector can provide consistently high-quality training, in line with the core content framework to make well-informed, evidence-based recommendations on how to make sure that:

  • All trainees receive high-quality training
  • The ITT market maintains the capacity to deliver enough trainees and is accessible to candidates
  • The ITT system benefits all schools.

At the heart of high-quality training is the role of the mentor. This month, the Julian Teaching School Hub has had the pleasure to meet with some of our new and expert mentors involved in ITT, both in the recent SCITT training delivered with Unity Teaching School Hub, and at the Mentor Conference: Navigating the changing landscape for primary and secondary ITT and ECT mentors.

On 2 March Charlotte Raby, an Early Reading Expert and English Consultant, as well as a member of the DfE Expert Advisory Group on the new Leading Literacy NPQ, delivered a keynote speech for mentors. In her talk, Charlotte looked at the Reading Framework – Teaching the Foundations of Literacy (DfE 2021) and how this guidance impacts primary and secondary teaching.

The next SNITT mentor session will look at Instructional coaching and the impact cycle and takes place on 29 March. For details, please visit Calendar - Suffolk & Norfolk SCITT (suffolkandnorfolkscitt.co.uk).
