Welcome

Hello! And welcome to this Early Career Teachers Programme newsletter.

Please read this email carefully: it contains important information.

Reading instruction research for primary ECTs

Ambition Institute is launching a research project to explore how different approaches to feedback can support teachers’ professional development. It is inviting primary ECTs to participate.

Teachers who participate will receive a free online training session from an experienced instructor to support their reading instruction. They will:

  • Learn about some novel, evidence-based reading techniques.
  • Get the opportunity to practice them with a simulated (avatar) pupil.
  • Receive feedback from an experienced instructor to help them refine their practice.
  • Receive a £10 Amazon voucher.

The training is straightforward and flexible (as it all takes place virtually) so teachers can fit it around their existing commitments. If your school would like to participate in this exciting research project, please get in touch.

Reminder

ECT or mentor staffing changes may affect our delivery to your school of the ECT induction programme. Please ensure that:

  • You let us know of any changes by completing this form (you will need to complete the form separately for each change you wish to make). You can complete this form at any time throughout the year.
  • You have updated Manage Training for Early Career Teachers
  • You have let your Appropriate Body know.

PLEASE READ THE SECTION OF THIS EMAIL THAT CORRESPONDS TO WHEN YOU/YOUR ECT BEGAN THE PROGRAMME.

Spotlight on... Tag team coaching

Now that we are half-way through the term, school induction tutors may be seeing short-term absences among their mentors. In these instances, we don’t want ECTs to miss out on their coaching. Therefore, we have introduced a tag-team coaching function which allows induction tutors to step in with coaching during this period.

We know that keeping up with the coaching routine helps ECTs remain engaged with their learning, as well as improving their practice, so we do encourage you to take advantage of this new feature. It will also stop us emailing you with coaching reminders!

Find out how to do it here.

Focus on... Ask your TSH!

Are you confused? Do you have burning questions and no answers in sight? Are you baffled, bemused, and/or bamboozled? Let us help!*

We are introducing a brand new, half-termly drop-in session where you set the agenda. Members of the TSH team will be online ready to answer your questions and set your mind at rest.*

Upcoming dates (links to follow):

  • Thursday 4 December, 9-10am
  • Monday 9 February, 3.30-4.30pm
  • Thursday 19 March, 9-10am
  • Thursday 21 May, 3.30-4.30pm
  • Thursday 18 June, 9-10am.

* (If you could confine your questions to ECT induction, StepLab, NPQs, initial teacher training, and other education-related topics, rather than existential musings about the state of the world and whether we are all, in fact, the ghosts of a long-dead civilisation clinging helplessly to whatever remnants of our souls linger floating through the void (for example), that would really help us out, thanks.)

Spotlight on... Supporting teachers with ADHD

With more people - particularly women - being diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood, it's important to know about reasonable adjustments and how your school can help you to harness your ADHD to make it work for you.
