Spotlight on... reporting a cause for concern
The vast majority of ECTs successfully complete induction. Where you have concerns that an ECT is not on track to meet the Teachers' Standards, it is important to inform us as your Appropriate Body immediately, so that we can advise and support as appropriate. You should make contact with us by phone or email.
In the resources section on ECT Manager, you can find a document entitled 'ECTs at risk of not meeting the teachers standards'. This document includes further guidance and steps to be taken in these cases as well as a support plan template. We have recently updated this guidance, following a review of recent cases. Therefore we ask that all tutors read it.
The general principles include the following:
- All due entitlements should be in place for all ECTs (see Statutory guidance)
- ECTs should be kept up to date on their progress against the Teachers' Standards and there should be no surprises
- A support plan should be created and agreed with The Julian Teaching School Hub before implementation
- Insert strict review periods for the support plan (usually about 5 weeks) and update us on progress once this period has elapsed
- The Headteacher must ensure that these additional monitoring and support structures are put in place immediately
- Be positive and encouraging, but at the same time make sure that the ECT understands the implications of continued unsatisfactory progress
- When you submit a progress review/assessment which indicates that the ECT is 'not on track', you must write to the ECT to explain your judgement, outline precise areas of improvement (in line with the Teachers' Standards) and outline the consequences of not passing induction.
