Welcome to the Julian Teaching School Hub teacher induction update for Induction Tutors and Headteachers. We hope you are well and looking forward to a relaxing half term break.

This newsletter contains important information for you regarding how to let us know if you have concerns about your ECT, and an opportunity for you to feed back to us about our AB service.

We would also like to thank you for all you're doing to make our ECTs feel welcome and supported in the profession.

Spotlight on... reporting a cause for concern

The vast majority of ECTs successfully complete induction. Where you have concerns that an ECT is not on track to meet the Teachers' Standards, it is important to inform us as your Appropriate Body immediately, so that we can advise and support as appropriate.  You should make contact with us by phone or email.

In the resources section on ECT Manager, you can find a document entitled 'ECTs at risk of not meeting the teachers standards'.  This document includes further guidance and steps to be taken in these cases as well as a support plan template. We have recently updated this guidance, following a review of recent cases. Therefore we ask that all tutors read it.

The general principles include the following:

  • All due entitlements should be in place for all ECTs (see Statutory guidance)
  • ECTs should be kept up to date on their progress against the Teachers' Standards and there should be no surprises
  • A support plan should be created and agreed with The Julian Teaching School Hub before implementation
  • Insert strict review periods for the support plan (usually about 5 weeks) and update us on progress once this period has elapsed
  • The Headteacher must ensure that these additional monitoring and support structures are put in place immediately
  • Be positive and encouraging, but at the same time make sure that the ECT understands the implications of continued unsatisfactory progress
  • When you submit a progress review/assessment which indicates that the ECT is 'not on track', you must write to the ECT to explain your judgement, outline precise areas of improvement (in line with the Teachers' Standards) and outline the consequences of not passing induction.

Are you new to the Induction Tutor role?

We know that role changes can happen throughout the school year and if you're new to the role of Induction Tutor you might be finding it daunting! To help, we've created a suite of training videos for you to watch in your own time that will hopefully answer any questions you have. The videos will take just over 50 minutes to watch: you can access them here.

Need to know... AB reforms

We have written to schools with information on AB reforms - what you need to know, and what you need to do. In short:

  • Teaching school hubs (TSHs) will become the main provider of AB services from September 2024 (except for specialist ABs for some independent and overseas schools).
  • Local Authorities (LAs) will withdraw from their AB role in two stages:
    • From September 2023 they will not take on any new ECTs
    • From September 2024 they will cease operating as ABs
  • From September 2023, all new ECTs need to be registered with a TSH AB.
  • Schools will also need to ensure that any ECTs who are registered with an LA AB and who do not complete their induction by September 2024 are then divansferred to a TSH AB.

You can read our full article about this here.

Our AB service... Tell us what you think!

We want to know what you think of our AB service: please be honest, and help us improve how we support schools, tutors, and ECTs. We'll keep the form open for two weeks from today.

Fill in the survey.
