Welcome

Hello! And welcome to our May newsletter. The team has just returned from the annual Teaching School Hubs training day, where our very own Sarah Bird and Kate Atkins led sessions talking about our work to the country's other teaching school hubs. It's so exciting to have our efforts recognised as being inspiring to our wonderful colleagues, and the day itself has given us lots of ideas as we move forwards into our second phase of designation.

BREAKING NEWS!

This week, participants on our spring 2023 NPQ cohorts got the results of their final assessments - and we would like to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who passed, and an equally huge THANK YOU to our wonderful facilitators.

The national pass rate for our partner TDT for this cohort was 93.4%, but ours was 98.6%, proving once again that the Julian Teaching School Hub is an excellent choice for your NPQs.

And finally...

We'd like to wish you all the very best of luck for your upcoming SATs, GCSE, and/or A Level cohorts - we know how talented, inspiring, and dedicated you are. We hope that the upcoming exam periods run smoothly for you all.

Keep in touch

You can follow us on X and LinkedIn, sign up to receive this newsletter - or just drop us an email.

Spotlight on... NPQ funding

In case you missed it: the DfE has announced the funding for autumn 2024 NPQs.

National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) complete the DfE’s golden thread, running from initial teacher training through to school leadership, rooting teacher and school leader development in the best available evidence and collective wisdom of the profession.

From autumn 2021 until this year, NPQs have been fully funded for all state-funded schools as part of the government’s Covid recovery funding.

The DfE has announced that for cohorts starting in autumn 2024 there will be a new funding model:

Funding to cover the full NPQ course cost will be available to teachers and leaders from:

  • The 50% of schools with the highest proportion of students who attract pupil premium funding
  • 16 to 19 educational settings identified as having high disadvantage.

For the early years leadership NPQ (NPQEYL), highly disadvantaged early years settings will also be eligible.

Full funding will continue to be available to all teachers and leaders from publicly funded schools and 16 to 19 educational organisations for the following NPQs:

  • Leading primary maths (NPQLPM)
  • SENCO (NPQSEND)
  • Headship (NPQH).

For the early headship coaching offer (EHCO), funding to cover the course fees will be available if you are in your first 5 years of headship in England in a state-funded school or state-funded 16 to 19 organisation. You should also be doing or have done the NPQH.

This announcement covers the autumn 2024 NPQs only. Funding for spring 2025 has yet to be announced.

If your school is in Broadland, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, North Norfolk, or Norwich, we will be contacting you in the coming weeks to let you know if your staff are eligible for the full funding. Please keep an eye out for the email.

Applications open in July.

Focus on... help us learn more about the ITT landscape

The DfE has asked us (and all teaching school hubs) to map initial teacher training provision in our hub area. What this means is that we are asking schools to let us know whether or not they are able to host an ITT trainee, host any part of intensive training and practice (e.g. provide a classroom and refreshments for a day or so), or maybe want to know more about either of these things.

The mapping exercise isn’t so that we can nag you to get involved – it’s simply so that we can build a geographic picture of where there are possible placements, and where there aren’t, in order for DfE to assess hot and cold spots.

We would be grateful if you would take one minute maximum (we’ve timed it!) to complete this survey for us – even if your answer is no, you can’t get involved: this is still valuable info and will stop us emailing you again.
