Welcome

Hello! And welcome to February's newsletter. We hope you were able to recharge over half term and feel refreshed as we make our way towards Easter.

In this newsletter, we take a closer look at the NPQLTD; introduce a new article series; look ahead to March with the MTPT Project; and round up some exciting opportunities for schools to get involved with education research.

Do you know somebody who may be interested in training to teach?

The Julian TSH will be attending a Get Into Teaching event next week, at Norwich City Football Club.  Whether you're almost ready to submit your application, or just getting started, you can get all your questions answered by a host of local and national ITT providers. This is a great opportunity to:

  • Maximise your chances of a successful teacher training application, with guidance from the experts
  • Watch presentations on everything you need to know
  • Speak to course providers in your area.

When: Wednesday 5 March, 5-8pm
Where: Norwich City Football Club, Carrow Road, Norwich NR1 1JE.
Register here.

And finally...

DfE have released the list of schools eligible for NPQ funding for spring 2025. We have contacted schools in our Hub area who are on the list - but if you're not sure if your school qualifies, please do get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

Keep in touch

You can follow us on X, Bluesky, and LinkedIn, sign up to receive this newsletter - or just drop us an email.

Spotlight on... the NPQLTD

The NPQ in Leading Teacher Development is ideal for ECT (or ITT) mentors looking to improve their practice and formalise what they've learned while undertaking the role.

You will learn how to implement high-quality professional development in your organisation and develop the practical capability to develop others with the skills to lead people and teams.

Don't just take our word for it - check out this article in which we hear from previous participants.

You can find out more - including information on funding and how to apply - here.

Just launched! 11 exciting research projects

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) is recruiting schools, colleges, and early years settings to take part in trials of high-potential programmes. They're also subsidising programmes that have previously shown to have a positive impact on student attainment, so more schools can benefit.

From Reception Jigsaw (developed by White Rose Maths), to Rehearsal Room Writing (developed by The Royal Shakespeare Company), to Making Fluent and Flexible Calculators (developed by HFL Education), there are so many ways to help shape education research.

Find out more here.

Focus on... Ask an AB

We're always looking for ways to demystify the induction process, so we've begun a new series of articles called Ask an AB.

You can find the first two posts in the news feed below, in which we explain how a reduction to induction works, and bust some myths around personal support plans. Please do share these widely - they can be found in the News section of our website, easily identifiable by their own graphic.

News from Norfolk Research School

Norfolk Research School is running a two-part webinar series, Maximising Maths: Metacognition and Manipulatives, in March. Join NRS Deputy Director (and year 6 teacher) Rachael Wilson as she talks through some of the trickier-to-nail evidence-based practices in Maths. Find out more and book your free place here.

Plus, if maths is really your thing, you can read a blog from Rachael on the subject here: Mathematical Manipulatives – Why and how?

Also on the blog: How (and why) to read Scientific Research Papers – a student’s perspective. "This brutally honest post was written by AN, a Y13 student, in 2017. We are re-publishing this as we prepare for a series of webinars about Disciplinary Literacy. It gives a student-eye view of what Scientific writing is and why it can be challenging to read, but also why it’s important (and rewarding) to do so." Read it here.

Finally, for the Royal Society of Chemistry, Dr Niki Kaiser (Director of Norfolk Research School) has written about how to teach atomic structure at 14-16 - read it here (free sign-up required).
