When and how to use dual coding effectively in teaching

A new study from Ambition Institute

How can teachers best use visuals to support pupils' learning in the classroom? Using visuals, such as pictures or diagrams, alongside words in teaching is called dual coding. It's popular in schools but its impact can vary.

Ambition Institute's latest study aimed to better understand when and how visuals help pupils learn so teachers can make informed choices about using them in lessons. It analyses evidence from 56 existing studies on dual coding and builds on the Education Endowment Foundation’s review of cognitive science in the classroom.
