New research from TDT

"What 1000+ teachers told us about CPD in schools"

Around £1 billion is spent annually on teacher professional development in England, yet only one quarter of teachers believe their CPD adequately takes pupil needs into account.

Over the past decade, there's been unprecedented investment in teacher development. Everyone agrees it matters, and research shows high-quality CPD can significantly improve outcomes. But nobody was systematically asking: is this investment translating into impact in classrooms?

The Teacher Development Trust (TDT) commissioned a survey of over 1,000 teachers and leaders to try and answer this question.

Key findings:

  • Nearly 40% say CPD hasn't clearly improved their ability to do their job
  • One in five teachers spent less than a day on formal CPD last year - over 112,000 teachers nationally
  • Only 24% say CPD adequately takes pupil needs into account
  • Time is the critical barrier (67%), with CPD often lacking relevance or follow-up
  • Major perception gap: 33% of leaders think teachers' needs are identified, vs 16% of teachers.
